Thailand will change visa conditions for Russians.

Specifically, there are plans to extend the existing visa leniencies, allowing our tourists to stay in the country visa-free for 90 days. The decree on such an extended period expires at the end of April.

According to Thai media reports citing the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), there is consideration in the country to extend the 90-day visa-free regime for Russians. The agreement’s term ends on April 30, but there are plans to extend it for at least a year. Officials assure that this should add at least a million nights of accommodation across the country and relieve Russian “winterers” of constant visa issues.

OUR REFERENCE: The scheme of unilateral and temporary exemption from tourist visas for holders of Russian passports or travel documents entering Thailand from November 1, 2023, to April 30, 2024, was approved by the Royal Government of Thailand on October 16, 2023, to allow stays in Thailand for up to 90 days.

Russian tourists previously could stay in Thailand for a longer period. One of the main methods was the so-called “border runs” and “visa runs.” The former involved short trips to Cambodia, allowing for a new stamp in the passport and extending the stay by another 30 days. The latter included a trip to Laos to the Thai consulate for a three-month visa. However, with the increase in the number of “border runs” in 2022, the number of Thai border officials seeking to profit from the situation, especially concerning Russian citizens, has increased. They demanded significant sums and were generally engaged in extortion. It is likely that such an almost legal method of “moral degradation” of Thai customs and police does not suit.
