How to apply for a tourist visa to Thailand while in Malaysia (Kota Baru)
If you are planning a tourist trip to Thailand from Malaysia, first check whether your nationality and travel purpose require a visa. This article covers applying for a Thai visa from Kota Bharu.

1. Preparing your application
Select the appropriate category on the official Thai e-Visa portal and follow the document list in your application. Requirements depend on nationality, visa category and the responsible mission; the former universal list of printed photographs should not be treated as current instructions.
2. Where to apply in Kota Bharu
Kota Bharu has a Royal Thai Consulate-General. Since 8 October 2024, foreign nationals in Malaysia apply through the online Thai e-Visa platform. In-person submission of passports and original supporting documents is no longer required for this process.
3. Tourist visa application steps
- Open the official Thai e-Visa portal and prepare your application using its instructions.
- Check the responsible mission and upload the requested documents.
- Monitor your status and requests for additional information. Confirm processing times with the mission rather than relying on the former “3–5 days” estimate.
- After approval, save and print the confirmation email to present to your airline and Thai immigration officials.
4. Fees and validity
Check the fee, visa validity and permitted stay for the selected category before payment. These are different parameters; the previous “15–60 days” and “US$30–60” ranges are not confirmed terms for your application.
5. Planning your trip
Follow the requirements of your application and the consulate’s decision. Using an agent does not replace these requirements or guarantee faster approval.
The application method was checked on 2 October 2026 against the official announcement from the consulate in Kota Bharu. Check for new announcements before travelling.
